We all agree that the ocean is beautiful to look at, but for women along Zanzibar’s coast, it means much more than that. Most days, you’ll spot them walking into its waters to farm and cultivate seaweed, carrying back what will become raw materials, an income, and a way of survival.

Carrying the weight of motherhood and their families, they work with what the island has to offer, turning the beauty of the ocean into a livelihood and a future, just her and her shore.

Find your Zanzibar

At first, you might think you’re simply looking at pointy sticks in the ocean. But beneath these shallow waters is a farm. Small pieces of seaweed are tied to ropes stretched between these wooden stakes, left to grow with the tides before they are harvested and dried.

We call plants “weeds” when they grow where we don’t want them to. But in some places, a weed can be of great value, valuable enough to be cared for Just like here in Zanzibar, where seaweed is far from being out of place.
